NCS Industry Insights: Cybersecurity

NCS Industry Insights: Cybersecurity

SipRadius founder and chief scientist Sergio Ammirata, Ph.D. recently contributed to an NCS Industry Insights roundtable exploring how cybersecurity risks are changing as broadcast workflows shift toward IP based, cloud connected, and distributed production models.

In his responses, Sergio points out that many of the most serious vulnerabilities are not in encryption itself, but in the devices and systems surrounding it. Unpatched hardware, poorly secured virtual machines, and forgotten access paths often create weak points, especially as productions extend beyond traditional facilities. As IP and cloud connectivity expand the attack surface, a single exposed device can provide access to an entire production chain.

Sergio also emphasizes the importance of zero trust thinking and infrastructure ownership. Rather than assuming systems are secure because they sit behind encrypted links or public platforms, broadcasters need to verify every device and control where and how decryption occurs. Maintaining direct oversight of infrastructure, access, and updates is key to protecting high value content and keeping live operations resilient.
