Content Everywhere: Maintaining Clarity on Cloud

As streaming platforms evolve, many are reassessing their approach to cloud adoption. This article by Content Everywhere IBC365 explored the shifting strategies behind cloud usage in the broadcast and streaming sectors. With input from industry leaders across the globe, the piece examined common misconceptions, regional challenges, and the importance of aligning cloud infrastructure with operational needs.

Sergio Ammirata Ph.D., founder and chief scientist at SipRadius, contributed expert insight on the risks and realities of cloud use in media environments. He cautioned that while cloud migration was once seen as a path to lower costs and greater scalability, public cloud platforms introduce significant challenges for media companies managing live production, secure distribution, and real-time collaboration. He emphasized that most cloud service providers were never built with the demands of broadcast in mind – latency can be unpredictable, encryption is often externally managed, and infrastructure is shared, increasing compliance and security risks.

Instead, Ammirata argued that private cloud environments offer a smarter path forward. Tailored specifically for media workflows, private cloud solutions allow broadcasters to retain full control over routing, encryption, storage, and timing. With technologies like MPEG-TS over RIST and real-time AV1 and JPEG-XS delivery, these systems can deliver high-quality, low-latency video without the trade-offs associated with general-purpose cloud platforms.

His contribution reinforced the idea that for streaming providers, resilience, control, and security must take precedence over convenience – particularly when managing high-value content in complex or distributed production environments.
